Jeff and Todd

Jeff and Todd

Where it all began...

  1. So Jeff and I love a good pie. Travelling as we do with Osler, now and again we've had the chance to sample the local fare. Not the mass produced variety, but the little bundles of love you can only get in a local pie shop or bakery.
  2. This all started as a running joke. As we made our way back up the Bruce Highway to the Sunshine Coast after yet another Brisbane trip, we passed "The World Famous Beefy's Pies". Resisting the urge, we vowed to save our Beefy's for a special occasion, perhaps our first sale. Everytime we passed Beefy's en route to home, we gazed longingly out the window, the car almost steering itself down the offramp. But we held firm, even when our colleagues threatened to sabotage our mission.
  3. With our first sale behind us it was time to break our duck. Beefy's didn't disappoint. In the glorious afternoon sunshine in May, Jeff tucked into a chunky beef, while I got stuck into my favorite, a steak, bacon and cheese. Mmmmmm.

    1. And so it began. Our mission now to document our Pie Cruise as we travel our home state, our nation and the world at large.
    2. Our mission? A parallel, cross-over systematic analysis of selected pie shops in our Osler journey

Below you can follow our journey in reverse chronological order

Noosa Heads, Queensland

  1. July 15, 2016

OK, so we get to live in one of the most beautiful settings in the world. But every now and then, the weather gods stop smiling, and perhaps smirk for a little while. The temperature might even briefly drop below 20 degrees celsius...
  2. So what better to do on a cold day...than have a pie! Let's face it, we've been derelict in not sampling the local fare until now anyway.
  3. It doesn't matter who you are, it's going to be hard not to find something you like about Noosa. The holiday and surf mecca 130km north of Brisbane has been a favourite destination since the 1890s. I remember coming here on holidays as a kid, driving for 2 days facing backwards in the old Volvo stationwagon with my sister. I'm still only just over the travel sickness...
  4. Noosa is truly spectacular, and if you've never done the walk through Noosa National Park to see the mighty Pacific Ocean pound into 100ft of sheer granite at Hell's Gates, then you've missed a special part of the world. Main Beach along Hastings Street is one of the most idyllic I've been to, and if you can't get in the water there, you're hydrophobic.
  5. The mighty Hell's Gates
    The mighty Hell's Gates
  6. The mighty Hell's Gates of Noosa National Park, with Noosa Heads itself in the background. (I'd just like to point out, I took this piccie myself!)

  7. And, Jeff and I get to live here.
  8. So today we're off to the "World Famous Noosa Pie Shop". We're not the only ones after a warming little parcel of goodness either. Jen and Kyle are out front - Jen is on her first trip to Australia, coming all the way from a little town in Utah, USA, and is about to sink her teeth into her first ever pie. Kyle's a local and talks her through the important step of saucing a hot pie, before watching her first bite with some amusement as the crust collapses.
  9. It's a touch fresh outside so we're both in need of some warming comfort food. JA takes the Lamb and Vege, while I'm going for the Butter Chicken and Jasmine Rice.
  10. Jeff's review : Overall, good to try something new. Tasty, including (with some degree of shock) the vegetables, with perfect sauce consitency and temperature. 4.5 Oslers out of 5!
  11. Todd's review : Who knew you could have one favorite meal inside another favourite meal? Great taste and huge chunks of chicken. Lost points because it was slightly cool, and could have done with a bigger "kick". Osler Pie Score : 4.0/5
